Steve and I lost our daughter Emma to congenital heart defects in 2001. Like the grief journey of anyone who loses a child, ours was long and hard. Yet years later, we are able to see clearly the positive impact Emma’s short life has made on our own. My passion for Healthy Birth Day and the Count the Kicks campaign is fueled by the intense love I feel for the child I never had the chance to know.

I had the wonderful opportunity to learn about Healthy Birth Day, Inc. and Count the Kicks through volunteer efforts supported by my employer, Strategic America. After working with the organization’s founders on their awareness campaign and helping with the 2015 Every Woman Counts luncheon, I wanted to do more to promote this amazing cause and help save babies.

Jayden Renee Caruthers was born still at 3:00 pm on October 9, 2003. She weighed 4 pounds and 12 ounces. Her skin was so soft, and her face was more beautiful than my husband and I could have imagined. We never got to welcome our daughter into the world because the moment we met her we had to begin saying goodbye.
